Federal Data Centers & Efficiency

Data centers currently consume about 2 percent of the combined energy in the United States.  In the federal government, the percentage of energy consumption rises to 10 percent, which has led to lawmakers initiating new bills for energy efficiency in data centers.  With new bills supporting energy efficiency, federal agencies operating data centers must focus on how to reduce their energy consumption and increase energy savings. Becoming more energy efficient starts with data center initiatives focusing on energy saving methods.  A method data centers already have implemented is the consolidations of data centers.  Trends to consolidate data centers encourage the Read More...

Tip of the Week: Optical Connectors

Tip from Product Manager Brian Teague at Microcare Corporation:   The most effective way to clean your fibres for before fusion splicing or to clean the end face of your optical connectors is to always wipe in a single direction. Wiping in a single direction will help you avoid accidentally reapplying any contamination you just removed. If you wipe a connector end face using a FIGURE 8 motion or using a BACK AND FORTH motion, you risk accidentally reapply the contamination you just wiped off.

Direct and Indirect Cool Economics

Direct and Indirect Cool Economics

Maintaining cool air within your data center is essential.  Your facilities equipment produces heat which needs to be neutralized by cool air to insure your equipment doesn’t overheat. Traditionally, air cooling in data centers involves air conditioning units (CRACs).  They ensure a certain air temperature is maintained throughout the center using raised floor and hot/cool air techniques.  This direct approach can have availability risks however.  Recent trends suggest “cool air/indirect” cooling might be the way to go. As opposed to CRACs, Indirect cooling is similar to opening a window.  The air from outside of the data center is used to Read More...

HVAC Maintenance for Data Centers

In previous DCS posts, our team discussed the benefits of alternative cooling options such as thermal management and oil immersion strategies. We were then reached out to by a colleague, Steven Wells, who wanted to also provide insight into traditional HVAC services. These are great, revolutionizing options, but the reality is that many data centers still depend on HVAC systems for their cooling operations and for some these are the best options for their needs. If you have HVAC systems as your main source of cooling, maintaining your systems properly is absolutely essential to the efficiency of your Data Center. Read More...

Why On Premise Data Centers Are Still Relevant

To handle IT workloads, organizations turn to on premise data centers and colocation. Though the cloud option exists, companies depend on the established methods of the data centers, which are commonly company-owned. Studies regarding IT workload allocation indicate more than 50% of IT professionals decided to operate in a data center setting versus a cloud computing setting.  The results of the study reflect how companies are continuing to utilize the established method of enterprise-owned data centers. Colocation is another option for organizations to manage their IT workloads.  By offering a rented space for data, the client can manage their IT Read More...
